Canoe Club win the BUSA Wild Water River Race
(19 December 2003)
The Canoe Club gained an impressive 221 points to beat their nearest competitor by 34 points to win the BUSA Wild Water River Race.
Individual- and team-timed runs take place on the river Dee, Wales and include shooting Serpents Tail and Town Falls. Gywn Ashcroft took gold in the Single Canoe (C1) event, and combined with Rob Holdway also took gold in Double Canoe (C2) race. The men's Kayak team Rob Holdway, Oliver Cunningham and Matt Reynolds took gold in their event while John Little took Silver in C1.
The Director of Sport, President of DUAU and our Team Durham 'mentor' congratulated the club as a whole and the team competing in the river race.
The individual achievements and overall win translate into 68 BUSA points for the university and these are added to the 35 points the club gained at the BUSA Canoe Polo Championships earlier this year. With the slalom event still to come canoing in Durham has never been in a stronger position.
