Young Achiever Awards 2003

(28 November 2003)

Durham University student Robin Butterfield has been awarded runner up prize in the Evening Chronicle’s Young Achiever Awards 2003.

A member of John Snow College, Robin was nominated in the Undergraduate Student Achievement section for his work organising charity and college events.

Robin, who is in his second year of Phase 1 Medicine at Queen’s Campus, holds the position of chairman on Medsoc which is a successful society run by medical students with regular socials, charity events, dinners and balls.

He has also taken on the position of freshers' director on the John Snow Junior Common Room committee. This voluntary position saw him organising nine days of events and entertainment for 370 new arrivals in the college. The week ranged from barbecues, bar crawls and themed nights in the union to bowling and cinema trips.

Martyn Evans, Principal of John Snow College, said: "Freshers' Week is a huge event and the effort Robin put in was reflected in the response we had back. Many students singled him out for praise.

"Robin has also organised two large swimming galas and raised £10,000 working voluntarily at national swimming events.

"He is a swimming timekeeper, judge and starter, and he has been appointed to BUSA swimming sports management group as a technical rep. He has also acted as a swimming official at county, district and national levels.

"Robin is an asset to the university and the community. He is enthusiastic and gives up his time and effort voluntarily with fantastic spirit to bring any event to life."
