Desperately seeking students!

(20 November 2003)

The University of Durham’s student volunteering service, Student Community Action (SCA), has a record number of new members after a hugely successful recruitment campaign.

The most popular project students volunteered for was One to One Tutoring with over 150 students signing up. The project allows volunteers to work with GCSE students on a one to one basis and tutor them in a range of subjects. There are currently only 40 tutees and due to the unexpected demand the SCA Executive Committee are now looking for more.

The One to One Tutoring has proved to be a particular rewarding project as volunteers have the opportunity to build a good relationship with their tutee and watch them progress through the year. The tutoring is provided free of charge to secondary school age pupils.

Chair of the Executive Committee Alastair McCabe commented, “The number of new volunteers exceeded our wildest expectations but now we really need to have contact with more local secondary schools and college students so that our new eager volunteers have the chance to put their knowledge and enthusiasm to good use.”

Catherine Isaacs, SCA Manager added, “I’m really excited to have so many new keen volunteers to work with, and I would urge any school or parent in the area who know a child who could benefit from our service to get in touch.”

If you wish to be tutored by a student volunteer or you know a child who might benefit please contact Catherine on 0191 334 1797.

Notes to Editors

Established in 1993, Student Community Action Durham is one of a national network of 140 student volunteering organisations in the UK. As a student run, non profit making organisation, SCA aims to provide Durham’s students with the chance to give something back to the local community that is their home from home. It also equips students with valuable skills outside of their academic studies. The range of projects offered by SCA includes educational, creative and active children’s projects, assisting children with special needs, working with the elderly and sports coaching.
