Triple success for outstanding student
(11 November 2003)

Academic success and personal achievement is to be rewarded at the University of Durham, Queen’s Campus, Stockton this week when over fifty top achievers will attend the annual Prize Giving Ceremony on Wednesday 12 November in the Waterside Room, Holliday Building, Queen’s Campus.
Among the recipients is Laura Bowers from Stockton who picks up three awards. The first year Biomedical Sciences student has been nominated by her tutors as one of the best all-rounders in Biomedical Sciences after gaining top marks in her year which included first class grades for every module.
Her achievements are made all the more remarkable by the fact that she has had many obstacles to overcome. Having her mobility severely restricted as a result of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, the compact site of Queen’s Campus and the proximity to her home provided Laura with the opportunity for successful study.
Laura said: “Thanks to the support system at the Queen’s Campus I have been able to really concentrate on my studies. I hope to enjoy the rest of my degree and then progress into research”.
She will be awarded the First Year Academic Achievement Award for Biomedical sciences, the Students in Residence Scholarship and the Ede and Ravenscroft Prize at the special ceremony which is hosted by University Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alan Bilsborough in the presence of the Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, Councillor Ann Cains, prize sponsors, tutors and student guests.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bilsborough said: ”We salute the success of all our prize winners, but the achievements of Laura are particularly inspiring and deserve a special mention”.
Media opportunity at 3 p.m. Wednesday 12 November 2003 Reporters and photographers are invited to meet Laura prior to the award ceremony in the Waterside Room, Holliday Building.
