New agreement signed between Durham University and Renmin University

The University of Durham has signed a new agreement of cooperation with Renmin University of China aimed at furthering the University’s cooperation with the People’s Republic of China.
The President of Renmin University, Professor Ji Boacheng and the Vice Chancellor of Durham University, Sir Kenneth Calman signed the agreement in Durham last week which will result in close cooperation in a number of fields of teaching and research.
Under the new agreement, the initial areas for collaboration include political philosophy, comparative politics, international relations, international political economy, European studies and Asian studies. The partnership will include exchanges of staff and students, joint research activities and participation in each other’s conferences, colloquia and symposia.
Further areas of cooperation are to be explored during the three-year agreement and may be extended to other academic areas and departments. During their stay in Durham, the senior delegation from Renmin University visited a number of departments including the Business School, Politics and Law. Professor Ji Boacheng also officially opened the conference focusing on China and East Asia held at Durham University.
Durham University’s Vice Chancellor Sir Kenneth Calman said: “We have long-established links with China and East Asia through research, exchanges and partnerships in a number of academic departments. We see it as absolutely vital to maintain and further expand our collaboration, especially with high-quality universities such as Renmin”.
As part of the agreement, the University of Durham has awarded an Honorary Professorship to Professor Song Xinning from the School of International Relations at Renmin University and Guest Professorships have been given to Dr William A Callahan and Professor Robert J Williams from Durham’s Politics Department by Renmin University.
Notes to Editors
- Durham’s association with Renmin University goes back to 1983 with students spending time in China in exchange for Renmin staff teaching in Durham. There are currently 17 Durham students undertaking their year abroad at Renmin University.
- The University of Durham is linked to Renmin University and the Free University of Brussels through the European Commission’s Asia-Link Programme. This three-year research project includes the exchange of visiting professors, visiting postgraduate students and research conferences with the aim of developing high-quality academic research on Asian politics by European and Chinese scholars.
- There are currently over 200 students from China studying at the University of Durham.
