Woman Professor joins Durham School of Engineering

(23 October 2003)

Dr Sana Salous has been appointed to the Chair of Communications Engineering in the School of Engineering in Durham and becomes the School’s only woman Professor.

Her main research is in the area of radio communications and is mainly concerned with the experimental study of the characteristics of the radio channel for mobile radio applications such as for third generation systems (3G).

Professor Salous’ current research projects are funded by the DTI and BT, highly qualified research, technology and IT operations businesses, and are concerned with future generation systems.

At the University of Liverpool she started her research working on the development of a wideband channel sounder as Research Associate.

After that, she has designed and implemented several wideband HF-UHF channel sounders with various configurations for the estimation of channel parameters relevant to system design. She has also worked on the design of waveforms and circuits of HF radar.

Her mobile radio research was recognised by BTexact, which is part of BT. After recognizing her research, BTexact invited Dr Salous to become a member of the Virtual University Research Initiative on mobility.

She is also a member of the National Task Group on Terrestrial and Mobile Propagation of the Radiocommunications Agency, Study Group3 as well as a UK delegate to the European programme COST 273 and to the ITU.

Notes to Editors:
