Owengate accident - 9 October

(10 October 2003)

An 18 year old student at the University is in intensive care in hospital in Durham after being involved in a road accident last night.

The woman, a first year student who arrived in the city to begin her studies five days ago, was with a group of students walking along Owengate. She was hit by a van that had been parked at the top of the slope and then rolled backwards.

The student, who is from the Midlands, received serious injuries. A University Officer contacted her parents who arrived in Durham later in the evening. Staff and student representatives went to the hospital last night. They met her parents and gave their best wishes for a speedy recovery.

A second student had minor injuries.
