Students' expeditions win awards

Two Durham University expeditions have won awards in the BP Conservation Programme 2003 awards.

A project to save threatened wildlife and forests in Madagascar won the top award of £45,000. A student team led by Barry Ferguson worked with the local Atandroy people in virtually uncharted forest, in a region identified as a global biodiversity priority.

An expedition to Uganda, studying one of the world's most threatened game birds won an award of £7,000 of the 32 project awards in 21 countries, the Durham expeditions were the only UK winners.
