River Tees provides inspiration for festival sculpture

120 logs will be towed by boat on Tuesday 29 July by local visual artists VISAr from the Tees Barrage to the University of Durham, Queen’s Campus, Stockton as part of the Stockton International Riverside Festival.

The logs will make up a floating sculpture in the shape of an isosceles triangle which will be imprinted with binary code, representing the colours of the rainbow and will placed in the bay outside the University’s Holliday Building for the duration of the festival.

Cut by British Waterways from a tree found in the river, the wood is being recycled to provide a natural art installation to inspire the many workers, joggers and festival goers who now walk along the banks of the River Tees.

The logs will be towed in formation from the Tees Barrage to the Queen’s Campus at approximately 2 p.m. on Tuesday 29 July and will then put in place by VISAr artists Dave Allinson and Michelle Tripp.

Dave Allinson said:” This is the second year that we have collaborated with the University of Durham to create a site-specific work. This year we are taking natural phenomena as a source of inspiration and fusing this with the aesthetics of computer language, representing both the learning and natural environment in which it is being placed. Our aim is to open up new spaces to new audiences during the festival period”.

The exhibition, which also includes a range of prints on display inside the University’s Holliday Building will be open to members of the public from 11 a.m until 7 p.m. until Sunday 3 August.
