University of Durham Council approves strategic improvement programme

(15 July 2003)

Durham University’s overall governing body, University Council, has approved the strategic improvement programme which will lead to the investment of £8.7m within the University to secure and sustain its strongest academic areas to ensure they retain their international competitiveness.

The University Council’s approval is subject to the outcome of a 90-day statutory consultation process about the strategic improvement programme. This involves discussions with staff and their representatives about the implications of the proposals for individuals.

The other aspect of the consultation process is consideration of viable alternative options put forward by the affected departments. These are being explored in a series of meetings involving the departments, Deans and other members of the University Executive Committee.

The outcome of the consultation will be reported back to the University’s Council at the end of September.

For details of the proposals, please refer to the press release issued on 18 June

For members of staff and students, further information about the Strategic Improvement Programme can be viewed at: internal.comms/local/proposals.htm

Note to Editors

The strategic improvement programme was approved by the University’s academic decision-making body Senate on 24 June. This was also subject to the consultation process outlined above.
