New Principal joins St Cuthbert’s Society

(14 July 2003)

The University of Durham has appointed Professor Roy Boyne as Principal of St Cuthbert’s Society. He will hold the post of Principal jointly with a post in the Department of Sociology.

Roy Boyne joined the University of Durham in 1996, and held the post of Vice-Provost at the University’s Queen’s Campus, Stockton until June 2003.

He writes on art, cinema and identity, and is a member of the Regional Cultural Consortium – Culture North East. He has for fifteen years been an active board member of the world’s leading journal of cultural analysis – Theory, Culture and Society. He published his third book – on risk – in March of this year, and has already started to plan the research for a book on visual propaganda in the media, and its effect on identity in the 21st century UK. This is likely to appear in 2006.

During his time at the University he has been active within the Tees Valley community, as Chair of the recently opened River Tees Watersports Centre, Chair of the Tees Valley Partnership’s Working Group on the Tees Valley cultural strategy, University representative on the North Bank Partnership, and as an active member of the Teesdale Business Association.

Professor Boyne says, "I am delighted to be joining St. Cuthbert’s Society, which remains one of the most innovative institutions within Durham University".
