All change for University numbers

(3 March 2003)

Callers by telephone and fax to the University of Durham need to use new numbers from the weekend of 22-23 March.

Due to continuing development, the University needs to upgrade its telephone system to allow for greater expansion in the future.

The main switchboard for the whole University both in Durham and the Queen's Campus, Stockton will be 0191 334 2000.

Departments, Colleges and other sections and services are now informing their regular callers and correspondents of the changes, and the University's Information Technology Service (ITS), which is co-ordinating the change-over, has set up a website with the complete new directory.

Customers, suppliers, schools, colleges and the general public can also check the new numbers at: www.dur.ac.uk/Directory/newunits

The existing system installed in 1986 has almost exhausted its number range and the change is necessary to cater for expected developments in future years. It also brings all telephones throughout the University in Durham and at Queen's Campus, Stockton within a single switchboard.

The University has more than 4000 direct-dial extensions which have all been changed from the current 0191 374 prefix in Durham and the 01642 numbers in Stockton.

For the first couple of weeks there will be extra switchboard staff on duty to help intercept callers who dial in with the old number. They will give the caller the new number.
