Gabby Logan launches 'Team Durham'
(14 February 2002)

Sports presenter Gabby Logan was in the region on Tuesday (12 February) to launch a new sports initiative Team Durham at her former University and, as part of the initiative, opened a £¾ m fitness suite for use by students and members of the public.
The new facilities, based at the University’s Sports Centre Maiden Castle in Durham, include a health and fitness suite, an aerobics/dance studio and high performance training area. The facilities are designed to encourage high performance athletes in a range of sports from cycling to rugby, netball to cricket. The gym is also open to members of the public.
Dr Peter Warburton, Director of Sport at the University of Durham said: "The concept behind Team Durham is to provide coaching, facilities and support for high performance athletes.
"We want to encourage and retain sporting talent at the University and also ensure students aren’t forced into making a premature choice between their sporting careers and their academic studies."
Team Durham is one of a range of sporting initiatives being developed by the University of Durham to foster and encourage sport in the region. Last month Sports Minister Richard Caborn launched Durham Sporting Club and Durham University Aquatics which see the University joining forces with a range of sporting clubs, schools and further education partners in the area to develop sporting talent in children from age 11 upwards.
Notes to editors: Gabby Logan studied a law degree at the University of Durham, graduating with a 2:1 in 1995.
