Durham University moves up in World rankings

(4 October 2012)

Professor Chris Higgins

Durham University has risen further in a prestigious league table ranking the world’s leading universities, further cementing its place as a global top 100 university.

Durham jumped three places to 80th in the Times Higher World Rankings 2012-13 and is one of only 10 UK universities to feature in the World Top 100, according to the guide.

The Times Higher league table ranks universities across the globe according to their strengths in five headline categories – teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.

Durham increased its performance across all of these key areas and scored highly in terms of citations, which recognises the University’s research influence, scoring 93.3 per cent.

The University is ranked in the World Top 50 for citations and for international outlook. It is also ranked in the World Top 50 for Arts and Humanities and Science.

In September Durham climbed in the QS World University Rankings which ranked the University in the World Top 100 and 20th in the world for employer reputation after 25,000 leading companies were asked to identify universities that produce the best graduates.

Durham is consistently one of the top-five universities in the UK, alongside Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and the London School of Economics. It is ranked fourth in the prestigious Sunday Times University Guide 2013 and fifth in The Times Good University Guide 2013 and The Complete University Guide 2013.

Professor Chris Higgins, Vice-Chancellor of Durham University, said: “Durham is a world university, internationally recognised for the quality of the research and teaching we offer and the quality of the graduates we produce.

“Durham students benefit from our unique college system, which enables them to learn skills for life through sport, the arts and outreach, combined with the high quality teaching and research delivered in our academic departments by some of the world’s finest minds.

“Our continued strong performance in this world league table and in many other rankings recognises the strengths and value of the all-round experience offered to our students.”
