Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe gives Durham University students acting master class

(3 June 2011)

Hollywood actor Russell Crowe has been passing on his acting tips to students at Durham University.

Crowe, who won an Oscar for his role in the movie Gladiator, held a workshop for members of Durham Student Theatre Group (DST) at the University's St Chad's College.

He was visiting Durham following a long-standing invitation from his friend and celebrated author Bill Bryson, who is the University's Chancellor.

Crowe and Bryson were also due to take part in an exclusive question and answer session with members of DST at The Assembly Rooms theatre in Durham.

Crowe, who was also nominated for Best Actor Oscars for The Insider and A Beautiful Mind, said: "I had a great time and there are some really talented students who were very enthusiastic. It was a lot of fun.

"Every part of the description of Durham given to me by Bill was true. It's beautiful and the Cathedral is really impressive. What a place to learn."

Bill Bryson added: "I am personally very honoured that Russell Crowe has taken time out of his busy life to do this great thing for Durham. He is a truly splendid human being."

DST has more than 800 members, including backstage crew and actors, and regularly performs at venues across the UK and the world.

DST president elect Sarah Peters, who was in the workshop with Crowe, said: "It was a fantastic experience for all of us and amazing to learn from such an inspiring person.

"We acted out scripts in pairs and Russell gave us feedback and answered our questions on the acting business. It was great to hear from him and it showed that it's not just a pipe dream, it really can happen.

"From a DST point of view it was excellent to have this opportunity and we feel very special."
