Congratulations sent to Durham’s world record breakers

Congratulations have been sent to a team of Durham University rowers who have broken the world record for rowing across the Atlantic.

Team Hallin rowed from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean in 31 days, 23 hours and 31 minutes. The previous record for crossing east to west was just over 33 days.

The successful team consisted of Durham graduates David Hosking, who skippered the attempt, Chris Covey, Paddy Thomas and Naomi Hoogesteger, who is currently doing a PhD and teaches in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University.  They were joined by Jack Stonehouse and Justin Johaneson.

 Professor Chris Higgins, Vice-Chancellor of Durham University, said:

"On behalf of the Durham University community I would like to send my warmest congratulations to Team Hallin on their magnificent achievement.

"They have shown great determination, tremendous positivity and a real will to succeed which typifies the spirit of Durham University and its students."
