Earth Science success

(10 January 2006)

Durham’s Earth Sciences department has had a succession of recent achievements for both itself and its graduates.

Three academic staff from the Department of Earth Science have received awards from the Geological Society of London. This is the main learned society representing the professional and academic Earth Sciences in the UK. The three awards, which are made on the basis of excellence in published research, will be made later in 2006 and represent 20% of the total number of honours bestowed by the Society on an annual basis. Professor Bob Holdsworth has been awarded the Aberconway Medal in recognition of his groundbreaking industry-related research into fault reactivation and use of digital mapping technologies. The awards to two younger staff, Drs Moyra Wilson (Lyell Fund) and Dougal Jerram (Murchison Fund) have been made on the basis of their research in carbonate sedimentology and 3D igneous petrology/volcanology, respectively. Additionally a recent graduate PhD student, Dr Nicola De Paola, has been awarded the Ramsay Medal by the UK Tectonic Studies Group - a prestigious international medal awarded annually for the best published paper by a postgraduate student and the 2005 award for the Best Paper by a researcher under the age of 30 that was published in the Journal of the Geological Society of London. These are the most recent awards that Nicola has received in recognition of his outstanding PhD research, he was awarded the Fearnsides Prize by the Yorkshire Geological Society late last year.
