1987-91 B.Sc. (Hons) in Chemistry (1st Class), University of Strathclyde, Glasgow

1991-95 Ph.D.“High Internal Phase Emulsions (HIPEs) and Polymerised HIPEs (PolyHIPEs)”, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow

1995–96 Post-doctoral research associate, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands

1996–97 Post-doctoral research associate, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh

1997–September 2005 Lecturer, Department of Chemistry, Durham University

October 2005-September 2008 Reader, Department of Chemistry, Durham University

October 2008-present Professor of Bioactive Chemistry, Durham University

Neil has published >100 articles, book chapters, reviews and patents and has given >100 invited presentations at conferences, symposia and colloquiua. His research interests concern the preparation of functional macromolecules and macromolecular materials, and he enjoys many fruitful collaborations both in the UK and abroad. He is a member of the EPSRC College and in 2003 he was awarded the Macro Group UK Young Researchers Award.

Neil is married (to Diana) with two children (Eilidh and Louis). In July 2007, he took up karate, mainly in order to protect himself in later years from Louis, who took up the same sport 18 months earlier. He is currently 4th Kyu (purple belt) and trains at the Newton Aycliffe Anshin-Ryu Karate Club.
