Entry requirements

We consider every application on its own merits, and warmly welcome applications from students with both standard and non standard qualifications. Please contact our Admissions Tutor if you need further information or guidance as to our entry requirements (please note that all applicants must satisfy our general University entry requirements).
A Level
Our standard offer is AAB from 3 A Levels to include Music, but not including General Studies or Critical Thinking.
In addition we require Grade VIII or equivalent in at least one instrument plus some proficiency in keyboard if this is not your first instrument.
If you are not able to take A Level music, we will accept ABRSM Grade VIII Theory in lieu of this requirement. Please state explicitly in your application, in either your personal statement or reference, if this applies in your case. However, please note that we do not accept Grade 8 theory as a substitute for an A level in another topic, so you will still need to achieve the standard offer grades in whatever A levels you take.
International Baccalaureate
A total score of 36 points to include a 5 in Music is required.
Scottish Highers
A typical offer of AAABB from Scottish Highers or AAB from Advanced Highers.
Other Qualifications
Please contact the Admissions Tutor for clarification of requirements regarding other qualifications such as BTEC, Cambridge Pre-U and Access Qualifications as well as international qualifications.
Deferred Entry
We are pleased to consider applications for deferred entry.
Open Days
Applicants are encouraged to attend the Music Department Open Days which take place during the Easter vacation (usually towards the end of March). These provide prospective students with an opportunity to visit the Music Department and meet members of staff, in addition to staying overnight in one of Durham colleges if they wish.
