Hamilton Harty: new recording edited by Professor Dibble
(10 May 2012)

This is a premiere recording of three of Hamilton Harty's unpublished chamber works which Professor Dibble has edited for the recording by Hyperion Records. The two string quartets Opp. 1 and 5 were prize-winning works at the Feis Ceoil. Though they were written in Harty's first flush of creativity, they show considerable melodic invention and a fluency in hyandling the quartet idiom. The Piano Quintet Op. 12 in F major, on the other hand, reveals the hand of a master and was the winner of the Lewis-Hill Prize in 1905. This is a generous, large-scale Romantic work, showing a fertile imagination for both string and piano writing as well as Harty's Ulster heritage.
