Biography
My research focuses on three main areas: Nineteenth-Century French literature and culture; the theory of parody and French Cinema. I have published numerous books and articles/chapters on Emile Zola, Naturalist and fin de siècle fiction, and parody. I have examined parody both in its cultural specificity in Nineteenth Century France and, more broadly, as a theoretical object (with particular reference to genre and reception theory). This has allowed me to explore the various ways in which parody raises questions about art, literature and representation.
I am also interested in the relationship between word and image at the end of Nineteenth-Century France, especially in the cross-fertilization between literature and visual and popular culture (pantomime, circus, posters).
My next book project focuses on French film director Claude Chabrol. I also have a strong interest in the French cinema of the 1920s and 1930s (Renoir and Carné) and on contemporary French cinema (Bruno Dumont).
I am the UK representative of the Société des Études Romantiques et dix-neuviémistes (SERD) and Series Editor of Studies in French Literature and Culture for Cambridge Scholars Publishing. I am a member of the advisory board of French film journal Ecrans.
I review for Nineteenth-Century French Studies ; French Studies ; Les Cahiers Naturalistes ; Modern and Contemporary France ; Fabula ; Modern Language Review ; Histara (Histoire de l'art, histoire des représentations et archéologie) and Revue d'Histoire littéraire de la France (RHLF).
I am happy to supervise students in the general fields of Nineteenth-Century French literature and culture and French Cinema.
