Level 1 (First Year) Modules

The Centre for Foreign Language Study offers the following open language modules in French, German, Japanese, Mandarin and Spanish, at level 1 (first year).
We also have a range of level 2 (second year) and level 3 modules.

Beginners' French	MLAN1041	This is a level 1 module for 1st year students with no (or very little) former experience of French language learning. 2nd and 3rd year students with no (or very little) former experience of French language learning may apply for a concession to take this module.
French in its Context	MLAN1071	This is a level 1 module for 1st year students with a GCSE qualification in French. 2nd and 3rd year students with a GCSE in French may apply for a concession to take this module.
French for Engineers	MLAN1091	This is a level 1 module for 1st year students with a GCSE qualification in French, designed excusively for the students studying Engineering.
Advanced French	MLAN1111	This is a level 1 module for 1st year students with an A' Level qualification in French who cannot take any of the modules available for them in the French Department. 2nd and 3rd year students with an A' Level in French may apply for a concession to take this module.
Beginners' German	MLAN1031	This is a level 1 module for 1st year students with no (or very little) former experience of German language learning. 2nd and 3rd year students with no (or very little) former experience of German language learning may apply for a concession to take this module.
German in its Context	MLAN1061	This is a level 1 module for 1st year students with a GCSE qualification in German. 2nd and 3rd year students with a GCSE in German may apply for a concession to take this module.
German in Its Context for Scientists	MLAN1131	This is a level 1 module for 1st year students with a GCSE qualification in German, especially designed for students from the Faculty of Science. 2nd and 3rd year students with a GCSE in German may apply for a concession to take this module.
Beginners' Japanese	MLAN1121	This is a level 1 module for 1st year students with no (or very little) former experience of Japanese language learning. 2nd and 3rd year students with no (or very little) former experience of Japanese language learning may apply for a concession to take this module.
Beginners' Mandarin	MLAN1021	This is a level 1 module for 1st year students with no (or very little) former experience of Mandarin language learning. 2nd and 3rd year students with no (or very little) former experience of Mandarin language learning may apply for a concession to take this module.
Advanced Spanish	MLAN1141	This is a level 1 module for 1st year students with an A' Level qualification in Spanish who cannot take any of the modules available for them in the Department of Hispanic Studies. 2nd and 3rd year students with an A' Level in Spanish may apply for a concession to take this module.
Beginners' Spanish	MLAN1011	This is a level 1 module for 1st year students with no (or very little) former experience of Spanish language learning. 2nd and 3rd year students with no (or very little) former experience of Spanish language learning may apply for a concession to take this module.
Spanish in its Context	MLAN1051	This is a level 1 module for 1st year students with a GCSE qualification in Spanish. 2nd and 3rd year students with a GCSE in Spanish may apply for a concession to take this module.
