Theses

Durham theses

A copy of all Durham Univeristy PhD theses for are held in the University Library. There a number of ways to search for a thesis on the catalogue. If you wish to browse all theses, limit the search to shelfmark and type Thesis into the search box. You can then search for an author or a word in the title or subject by selecting the Limit/Sort search button above your search results.

Alternatively you can search by Subject from the catalogue screen. Type in Theses followed by Economics or Economics & Finance. You can browse these for more detailed subject entries.

Theses are reference-only and so cannot be borrowed or taken out of the library. You will be asked to sign a copyright declaration to confirm that you have consulted the item. A copy of all theses are kept at the Bill Bryson Library in Durham, although there are some copies held at other site libraries, if they relate to a collection held there. These are accessed in a number of different ways so please ask for further details at the specific library.

Theses in another institution

The key abstracting and indexing service for theses in Great Britain and Ireland is Index to Theses. There is a printed copy of the index, dating from 1953, available in the Bill Bryson Library at Ref 013.37842 ASS. It is also available online from 1716 to the present. This is database has details of all theses accepted for higher degrees and includes abstracts in many cases. It covers many subject areas and can be searched on a number of levels, including by institution.

Other theses are covered in ProQuest Digital Dissertations which contains information about doctoral dissertations and master's theses in North American graduate schools and some European universities on a wide range of subjects. Details date from 1861 to the present and abstracts are included from 1980 onwards.

Access to theses not available in Durham Univeristy Library can be arranged for members of the univeristy by completing a Document Delivery form. There is an additional form for thesis requests. A small charge applies for this service. For more information see the Document Delivery Service.
