Theses

Durham theses

A copy of all Durham University PhD theses for are held in the University Library. There a number of ways to search for a thesis on the catalogue. If you wish to browse all theses, limit the search to shelfmark and type Thesis into the search box. You can then search for an author or a word in the title or subject by selecting the Limit/Sort search button above your search results.

Alternatively you can search by Subject from the catalogue screen. Type in Theses followed by Earth Sciences or Geology. You can browse these for more detailed subject entries.

Many of our theses are now available online, and we are digitising our whole collection. To find out more about accessing theses see our Theses information page.

Theses in another institution

The key abstracting and indexing service for theses in Great Britain and Ireland is Index to Theses. It is available online from 1716 to the present. This database has details of all theses accepted for higher degrees and includes abstracts in many cases. It covers many subject areas and can be searched on a number of levels, including by institution.

The British Library's EThOS service holds thousands of theses which have already been scanned, and thousands more can be scanned on request to EThOS.There is further information on the Document Delivery Service  page.

 Other theses are covered in ProQuest Digital Dissertations which contains information about doctoral dissertations and masters' theses in North American graduate schools and some European universities on a wide range of subjects. Details date from 1861 to the present and abstracts are included from 1980 onwards.
