If we are online type your question in the box below and one of our staff will reply. If we are offline please contact us using the online enquiry form or by using one of the links in the top right hand corner of the page. If we appear to be offline during online hours please wait a couple of minutes and refresh the page.
What is Instant Messaging?
Instant Messaging (IM) is real-time text communication between two people on a computer or other device via the internet.
What is Meebo?
Meebo allows Library users and visitors to Instant Message us from anywhere in the world via our web pages (or duo?) so we can provide real time answers to questions and enquiries. You will see a box that you can type into and see replies, this is called a widget.
Do I need to Log In to use Meebo?
No. If we are online you can ask us your question immediately by typing your message into the text entry box. If you would like to change your nickname from the default one you are given, click on 'edit nickname' below the text entry box and type your preferred nickname. When you have done this press ENTER.
How do I use Meebo Instant Messaging?
Just click in the text entry box (the bottom white box) and start typing your question. When you have finished typing your question press ENTER. A member of Library staff will answer your enquiry as soon as possible during the hours Meebo is online.
Who will see my message?
The only person who will see what you type is the member of Library staff answering your enquiry. They will tell you if they need to pass your information on to anyone else to help answer your enquiry.
What happens if I lose my internet connection?
Unfortunately Meebo does not log conversations. If you lose your internet connection please start a new conversation when you return to the page and tell the member of staff what you were previously discussing so they can continue to help with your enquiry.
Can I send you an instant message at any time?
During term time from October 2010 we will staff Meebo from 10am-12noon & 2pm-4pm. As this is a new service we will regularly review the availability and make changes to the hours as required. The current operating hours will be featured at the top of the page.
What do I do when Meebo is offline?
You can send us a message via our
online enquiries form at any time, which will be responded to during working hours Monday to Friday. Alternatively you can find other ways to get in touch on our
contact us page.
Why can't I see the Meebo box?
If you are using your own computer you will need to download the latest Adobe Flash player to see/use the widget. It is available for download at
http://www.adobe.com/go/getflash/. If you are on a Durham University computer and you can't see Meebo please email
library.webmaster@durham.ac.uk. Because the Meebo widget uses Adobe Flash player it may not work on mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets.
What does the green button in the top right hand corner do?
This allows you hide yourself and ignore messages from the owner of the meebome widget of that page. Note that disabling a meebo me widget will NOT disable all meebo me widgets, but just that chat session on that page or wherever that same widget is posted. When you come back to the page, your disabled preference will be remembered if you are using the same machine. To re-enable the widget, click anywhere on the widget.
Is there anything I can't ask?
Meebo Instant Messages are answered by library staff who will be able to answer questions related to the library and pass on any queries to other members of library staff where appropriate. We will not tolerate offensive, abusive or inappropriate discussions and these will be terminated immediately.
