Standards

Standards are officially approved specifications applicable in various sectors of trade and industry. British Standards Online offers a searchable index to British Standards. Access is available to the full text of standards online.

Durham Public Library (Clayport Library in the centre of Durham) has the full British Standards service available online in their Reference Library on the first floor. It is possible for anyone to view the full texts of British Standards Online there. However, you have to be a member of the Public Library in order to print out the standards for which there will be a cost, and you would be expected to return the printed copy to the Library after use.

Patents

Patents are an important source of information, much of the material is never published in any other format. There are a number of free resources available via the Internet but for a comprehensive search reference should be made to the Patent Office. The Patent Office site gives information about patents as well as about making patent applications.
