The large-scale maps and plans are of properties in the areas of Ryton, Chopwell, Stella and Winlaton, Co. Durham, many surveyed by the Bell family of surveyors. They are dated between 1775 & 1870 with many undated, most are of the early 19th century.
3 volumes, mainly of precedents, proceedings, forms, depositions, fees and items relating to courts ca.1569-1733 mainly in the north of England: - Vice Admiralty Courts at Newcastle, York and elsewhere; Durham Consistory Court; the Archbishop of York's spiritual courts; Durham Chancery Court and Courts of Pleas & Assizes; the High Court & Exchequer, Westminster; depositions 1677-78 in Durham Chancery Court.
About the creator:
The firm of Clayton and Gibson, soliticitors, of Newcastle upon Tyne was formed in 1877. This continued under that name until 1972, when it became Wilkinson, Marshall, Clayton and Gibson, uniting the business with Wilkinson, Marshall and Company with whom it had merged in 1951. The Bell family were noted surveyors in the region, based in Newcastle upon Tyne in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Given to the Department of Palaeography & Diplomatic, 3 November 1960 by Sir William Gibson of Newcastle upon Tyne.
