About the creator:
The manor and estate of Crayke (sometimes Crake or Craike) in Yorkshire was in the possession of the Bishops of Durham until the 19th century, but in 1827 Bishop Van Mildert obtained an Act of Parliament (Priv. Act. 7 and 8 Geo. IV, c. 42) enabling him to sell it. Crayke belonged to the diocese of Durham until 1837, whereafter it became part of the diocese of York. It was part of the Palatinate and County of Durham until 1844, after which it became part of Yorkshire.
