Information Resources for Social Exclusion on the Web

Precise definitions of what is meant by "social exclusion" vary, but they include factors that may bar or restrict an individual's ability to participate in mainstream society.  These factors may include unemployment, poverty, poor education, or ill health plus many others.  The following resources provide a range of detailed material on this subject:

 

Equality and Human Rights Commission

On 1 October 2007 the three equality commissions merged into the new Equality and Human Rights Commission: 

  • Commission for Racial Equality (CRE)
  • Disability Rights Commission (DRC)
  • Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC)
  • Community Care
    The Community Care website is the leading online medium for those working in social care and it contains articles published in the Community Care magazine. The site also contains breaking news within the sector, as well a daily summary of social care related stories from UK national newspapers. 
    Guardian: Social Exclusion Homepage The Guardian newspaper has a section dealing with social exclusion which gives links to recent news stories on poverty, inequality and welfare reform.
    Social Care Online  From the Social Care Institute for Excellence. This site offers "the latest social care information and research [in] tens of thousands of abstracts of books, reports, research papers, journals, government publications and websites..."
    Joseph Rowntree Foundation  The Joseph Rowntree Foundation works in partnership with a variety of academic and other institutions. Their aim is to better understand the causes of social difficulties and to explore ways of overcoming them.
