Bill Bryson Library service levels
During 24/7 opening hours, three different service levels will operate at the Bill Bryson Library:
Full service hours will operate from Monday to Friday, between 09:00 and 17:00. All Library services are available during these hours.
Evening and weekend staffed periods will be in operation between 17:00 - midnight Monday to Thursday, 17:00 - 22:00 Friday and 10:00 - 22:00 Saturday and 10:00- midnight Sunday. During these hours, Library staff can help you with a range of queries and most services are available.
Self-service hours will operate overnight between midnight - 08:00 Monday to Friday and between 22:00 - 10:00 Saturday and midnight to 08:00 Sunday. During self-service hours staffed services will be unavailable. Overnight, the Library will be manned by security staff who are unable to answer circulation queries or check patron records. Laptops and Study Room keys
Due to the extension in opening hours, laptops and study room keys will be available for longer during Library 24/7. During weekends, study room keys will be available from 10:00 until the last collection time (see below) but they must be booked in advance during full service or evening service hours from Monday to Friday. Study room keys and laptops will be subject to the following restrictions on borrowing and return during evening and weekend periods and self service hours:
| Day | Last collection time for laptops and study room keys | Time to be returned |
| Monday - Thursday | 19:30 | 23:30 |
| Friday | 19:30 | 21:30 |
| Saturday | 17:30 | 21:30 |
| Sunday | 18:00 | 22:00 |
Returning items: The Bill Bryson Library has recently moved to a new manual returns system. Overnight during self service hours, books will not automatically clear from your record as security staff are unable to check books in. Books returned overnight will be backdated when full service or evening and weekend service hours resume.
The Short Loan collection will be available throughout the 24/7 period at the Bill Bryson Library and will adhere to normal term-time borrowing rules. See our page on Short Loan items for more details.
Reserved items will be available for collection at all times from the yellow shelves in the Short Loan section. For further information on reserving items, click here.
Document delivery items will be available for collection during staffed hours only. The return times for confined document delivery items will not change during the 24/7 opening period and will be due for return at 19:30 Monday to Friday and 17:30 Saturday to Sunday. For further information, see our document delivery pages.
For full details of services and facilities available during each of the service levels operating during 24/7 opening, see our Service levels table.
Changes to noise zones: Shhhh...
During the Easter term, Levels 1, 3 and 4 at the Bill Bryson Library will become silent study areas to help students revise effectively for their exams.
If you want to talk to friends or work on a group project, please go to the group work area on Level 2 or book a group study room. If you want to make a telephone call, please use a Phone Zone.
