2.4.5: Assessment Concessions

1. Assessment Concessions can be sub-divided into two distinct types.

2. The first is those that cove the physical circumstances under which an examination is to be sat. The following types of concession can be applied for within this category' and 'other' assessment concessions. Within the sub-division the following types of concession apply:

  • Additional time for the examination
  • The student to be in a different room
  • The student to be provided with a scribe/amanuensis

3. The second are referred to as 'Other' assessment concessions. The following 'Other' assessment concessions may be requested:

Further guidance

4. Detailed guidance on specific 'other' assessment concessions can be found in the appendices linked to in the table in paragraph 3. In addition the following guidance applies to admissions concessions:

a. 'Other' assessment concessions can be requested for students registered for undergraduate, taught postgraduate programmes and those postgraduate research students being assessed in the taught phase for a professional doctorate or integrated PhD.

b. An assessment concession is not required for the award of an Aegrotat. The criteria for such an award is detailed in the Core Regulations for Undergraduate programmes.

c. In relation to concessions to defer examinations where the student is to spend time out of residence before returning to undertake assessment, the duration of such concessions should not normally exceed 12 months. Such concessions for a longer period of time, or the extension of such a concession initially granted for 12 months, may only be granted, for up to a further 12 months, in exceptional circumstances. Any requests to extend such concessions beyond a total of 24 months will not be granted. Where a request to extend such a concession is not granted, the chair of the relevant Faculty Education Committee should consider whether it would be appropriate to grant such a student a concession to repeat a year.
