Learning and Teaching Handbook

1.7.3: Direct Entry

The procedure outlined in paragraphs 1-6 below must also be followed in the case of applicants which colleges/departments wish to admit direct into the second or (in the case of four year degrees) third year of a degree programme.

Matriculation Concessions

    1.

Where colleges and departments wish to admit an applicant who does not satisfy the requirements of the Matriculation Regulations, the college will need to apply for a matriculation concession on behalf of the applicant in consultation with the department(s).

    2.

Requests for matriculation concessions should be submitted on the standard University concession request form, to the Student Recruitment and Admissions Office. They should be accompanied by a photocopy of the candidate's UCAS application and a letter of support from the department(s) stating the reasons why the student is academically suitable for entry onto the programme despite not possessing the qualifications required by the Matriculation Regulations.

    3.

In cases where a student is transferring from another university, the department must seek a reference from that university which confirms both:

a) the student's academic standing at the university, and

b) that the student has not been the subject of discipline procedures.

This confirmation should be included with the materials forwarded by the college to the Student Recruitment and Admissions Office.

    4.

The request will then be considered by the Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor or his/her appointed representative.

    5.

The Faculty's Office will inform colleges and departments of the outcome of the consideration of matriculation concession requests.

    6.

Colleges and departments must give no undertakings to candidates until the request for a matriculation concession has been formally approved by the Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor.
