Biography

Yigit Kaynar joined Durhan Law School as a PhD candidate in October 2011. He holds an LL.B. (2009) and an LL.M. in Human Rights Law (2010), both from the University of Nottingham. His LL.M. dissertation was a critical evaluation of the international humanitarian law applicable to internal armed conflicts, focusing on ways in which the relevant law could be improved so as to promote compliance by non-state armed groups.

Current Research

Under the supervision of Professor Michael Bohlander, Yigit's research focuses on international judicial independence. During the course of his research, he will examine the degree to which today's international judicial institutions enjoy judicial independence and assess two proposals for reform: Drafting an international document setting out new standards of international judicial independence, and establishing a new international institution responsible for overseeing the administration of the international judiciary.
