Kaleidoscope in Collaboration with Gylphi

(3 December 2008)

The advent of online publishing has led to the development of numerous new journals publishing work by and for postgraduate researchers. Few, though, are fortunate enough to claim the involvement of professional publishing houses. However, the launch of the second issue of Kaleidoscope sees the advent of an exciting collaboration between Kaleidoscope and a newly-established publisher in the Arts and Humanities, Gylphi (http://www.gylphi.co.uk).

For the release of Volume 2, Issue 2, Gylphi have generously provided a typesetting service for the journal, ensuring that its look and feel matches that of paid-for publications. The journal now has the quality of a print publication, albeit one intended for reading online in the first instance.

Gylphi’s involvement also allows Kaleidoscope’s postgraduate editors and authors to gain vital training in all stages of the publishing process, including that of preparing a work for print.

Whilst postgraduate journals can maintain high academic standards, their online medium gives editors and authors a degree of flexibility that is not accorded to traditional, paper-based publications. After publishing online, minor errors in copy or facts can still be rectified instantly by updating a web page. However, much of the prestige of professional journals derives from the fact that after peer-review and editing, any errors that are subsequently discovered cannot be corrected once the journal has been set and printed. Consequently, there is more pressure on the editors and authors to ensure the accuracy of each article before publication.

Replicating this real-world process, Gylphi’s involvement in the final stage of publishing Kaleidoscope ensures an additional check on the editorial trustworthiness of each journal issue. Kaleidoscope’s peer reviewers’ and editors must proof and copy-edit each article with the utmost care; and, as well as receiving editorial comments, authors are required to check the typeset proofs, replicating the full process of academic publishing, from submission to print.

The use of a typesetting service for Kaleidoscope is one more reason why the journal is claiming a prominent place in the context of postgraduate publications. The editors of Kaleidoscope are extremely grateful to Gylphi for offering to work with the journal on a courtesy basis.
