Media, Representation, Persistence, and Relief: the role of the internet in understanding the physical and social dynamics of catastrophic natural hazards.
The media plays a key role in the public’s knowledge and understanding of catastrophic natural disasters. The more media coverage a natural disaster receives, the higher the public interest, and the higher the likelihood that the public will donate their time and money to humanitarian assistance.
To this end, we aim to assess the role the internet can play in understanding the physical and social dynamics of catastrophic natural hazards and the subsequent global distribution of humanitarian aid and assistance.
