British music of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; the music of Parry, Stanford, and Elgar; Church music of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the work of John Stainer, Edward Dannreuther, Henry Hadow, and Ernest Newman; American music of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (especially the 'Boston Classicists'); nineteenth- and early twentieth-century church music; musical nationalism; British historiography in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
