Erasmus, Exchange & Study Abroad

Fees & Finance

How to finance a study abroad period is one important aspects for both students and parents. The Erasmus programme and the University offer important financial support to helo you realise your ambition.

For full details about tuition fees, grants and loans and to view eligibilty criteria, please consult the Erasmus FAQs for students.

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees are a big part of the annual expenditure when following a course of studies at university.

Erasmus students studying abroad at one of Durham's partner universities will be exempt from paying tuition fees at the partner university for the duration of their Erasmus studies. In Durham students may qualify for reduced tuition fees or even a tution fee waiver under certain conditions, whether they undertake an Erasmus work or study placement or a combination of placements.

Erasmus Grant

The University receives funding from the UK Erasmus National Agency to award mobility grants to eligible students going on confirmed Erasmus placements. Grants are calculated per mobility month and students will normally receive their grant at the start of their placement or as soon as funds become available. The grant amounts vary from year to year and in the past 2 years have been between € 310 - € 370 per month.

The Erasmus mobility grant does not cover full costs but the additional costs associated with studying abroad i.e. travel and cost of living differences. In some circumstances a student may be asked to repay part, or all, of the Erasmus grant at the end of the placement period. This could be for a number of reasons, for example, failure to meet all requirements of the placement period abroad or leaving a placement early. However, all situations will be discussed on a case by case basis.

Student Loans

Students can still apply for the full Maintenance Loan and/ or Grant from Student Finance England/ Local Authority. Students may also be entitled to a Long Courses Loan if the course exceeds 30 weeks and 3 days in length and a Travel Grant of up to £250 if the total travel cost to attend the placement exceeds a certain amount. Any queries regarding the payment of your maintenance loan/ grant please should be directed to the Student Financial Support Office by email at: financialsupport.undergraduate@dur.ac.uk.
