Postgraduate Scholarships

Durham University is delighted to offer three prestigious Commonwealth Shared Scholarships for students starting postgraduate taught courses in 2012/13. 

The scholarships are jointly funded by the Department for International Development and Durham University. Each covers the cost of one return journey between the award-holder's home and Durham (economy class), and provides full payment of tuition fees, a stipend of £882 per month, a grant of a £200 towards the cost of study travel, a grant of £225 towards the cost of thesis binding and the cost of up to 10 Kilograms of excess baggage (books only) for scholars returning home at the end of their awards (2011 figures). 

Awardees become part of an international community of scholars, alumni and government agencies, all of whom contribute to the achievements of Commonwealth Scholarships.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Have applied for a place on an eligible programme at Durham University;
  • Be a national of or permanently domiciled in a Commonwealth developing country.

Please apply for a place at Durham University through the online application form. Please indicate in the relevant part of the online application form that you would like to be considered for a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship. If you have already applied for a place at Durham University through the online application form, please inform the Department to which you have applied that you would like to be considered for a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship.

Durham Santander Scholarships

In partnership with Banco Santander, Durham University will be awarding 6 postgraduate scholarships to outstanding candidates from Latin America.

Each scholarship is worth £5000 and will be open to students applying to study a taught masters degree* in any discipline starting in October 2012.

*(Excludes MRes and Masters by Research)

Application procedure:

  • All students who meet the above criteria will automatically be considered for the scholarship
  • This is a competition and all awards will be based on academic excellence

Van Mildert College Trust - Research Scholarships

The Trustees invite applications for the 2012 Van Mildert College Trust Research Scholarships. Two scholarships are available; one is open to all subject areas and one, partially supported by the Fenham Trust, is specifically for research in the Arts and Humanities. Applicants, who may be of any nationality, must possess, or be expecting to obtain, a first class degree or equivalent and demonstrate outstanding potential to undertake research at the highest level. The successful candidates will register for a full-time PhD at Durham University in any discipline commensurate with the research activities of the University. The 3-year scholarship covers fees, complimentary accommodation and meals within Van Mildert College and a stipend of £5,500 per annum for 3 years from October 2012.  It is expected that the successful applicants will act as Resident Mentors to our undergraduate student community.

Applications in the form of a curriculum vitae and a 1,500 word statement of the research project to be undertaken should be sent to The Principal, Van Mildert College, Mill Hill Lane, Durham DH1 3LH, U.K. or electronically to david.harper@durham.ac.uk by 1700 hours GMT on Monday 27th February 2012. Candidates must provide contact details of two academic referees and are encouraged to make direct contact with potential supervisors to discuss their research project statement prior to submission. Short-listed candidates will be required to apply on-line to the Graduate School for acceptance onto a PhD programme, prior to the Trustees deciding the award.

PLEASE NOTE:  Durham University students who are currently registered for a PhD are not eligible to apply for these Scholarships.

Said Foundation Scholarships

Durham University is proud to be a partner of the Said Foundation in offering scholarships for students from Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria. The scholarships are in memory of Karim Rida Said and since their introduction in 1984 they have enabled almost 600 young people to gain a university education overseas and to contribute to the development of the Middle East region. In partnership with the Foundation, scholarships are available to study for any one year taught masters programme at Durham University. Scholarships range from partial support to full fees and a maintenance allowance. To apply for a Said Foundation Scholarship at Durham University you must:

  • have a good first degree
  • provide evidence of your English language ability
  • be Jordanian, Lebanese, Palestinian or Syrian and resident in the Middle East
  • be able to demonstrate that you chosen Masters degree will be of use to the development of your home country or the Middle East region
  • have at least two years' work experience
  • hold an offer from Durham University for a taught Masters degree
  • sign a binding undertaking to apply the skills and knowledge you have gained in one of the Foundation's target countries (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine).

Applications for the Scholarship are made direct to the Foundation and not Durham University. The British Chevening Scholarships

Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and administered by the British Council, these prestigious awards enable overseas students to undertake postgraduate study in the United Kingdom.

How to apply

If you want to apply for a scholarship, you will have to contact the British Embassy/High Commission or The British Council in the country of which you are a citizen. Please see the full country listing and select the country for which you are a citizen for the application procedure.


What are the selection criteria for application?

Candidates for these scholarships must normally meet the following criteria:

  • A graduate with proven academic skills.
  • Committed to return to their country and contribute to the socio-economic development of their country through implementing the new skills and knowledge acquired in the UK.
  • Established in a career, with a track record of excellence and achievement, and the prospect of becoming a leader in his/her chosen field. The vast majority of Chevening scholars are aged 25 - 35 years old.
  • Be able to show at interview that they possess the personal qualities to benefit from their scholarship and use it to succeed in their chosen career.
  • Have a clear idea how their scholarship will benefit their country on their return.
  • Have good English Language skills, as most UK Higher Education Institutions require a minimum IELTS of 6.5 for admission onto Postgraduate courses.

What are the financial arrangements?

There are three types of scholarship:

  • Type A scholarships – these cover tuition fees only.
  • Type B scholarships – these are full scholarships that cover tuition fees, monthly stipend and various one-off allowances.
  • Type C scholarships – these vary from award to award and cover part/full stipend and/or allowances.

Durham University - India Scholarship Scheme (Postgraduate Studies) 2012 entry

Durham University will be awarding two half tuition fee postgraduate scholarships to outstanding candidates from India.

Successful candidates will receive a 50% reduction in their tuition fees, but will be responsible for accommodation and living costs during their stay in the UK (as an example UKBA recommend that students budget GBP 600 per month for living costs, and a 50-week stay in Ustinov College, Durham's postgraduate College, costs approximately GBP 6,000).

All of the programmes eligible for the scheme are of one year duration and the full tuition fees are:

  • MSc Management - 15,500 GBP
  • MSc Strategic Marketing - 17,500 GBP
  • MSc Finance - 17,500 GBP
  • MSc (by Research) New & Renewable Energy - 16,100 GBP

Applicants must:

  • Submit their application through Durham University's Indian agent - Fateh Education - http://www.fateheducation.com/contactus.html
  • Hold a first division bachelors degree from an Indian institution recognised by Durham University
  • Satisfy the admissions requirement of their chosen course, including English Language proficiency
  • Be a national from, and residing in, India
  • Be liable to pay fees at the overseas student rate
  • Be intending to start their course of study in September 2012
  • Submit a one page statement of purpose. This must include their eligibility for the award, their motivation for taking the course in the UK, and any relevant extra-curricular activities and/or work experience

Scholarship Application Procedure and Timescales

  • The deadline for applications to be considered for the award is Friday 22nd June 2012
  • All students meeting the above criteria will automatically be considered for the Scholarship
  • Applications will be considered by a panel of senior academics from the relevant faculties
  • Successful students will be informed by Monday 30th July 2012
  • The Scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis. Each award will be made on the basis of academic excellence

The 'statement of purpose' will be used to help further judge students.
