Latin Palaeography Course Outline 2013
The Summer School will begin on Monday 19th August. The course itself will consist of 10 classes of three hours each, on the following topics:
Week 1
1) The Roman System of Scripts
2) The National Hands
3) Caroline Minuscule
4) Introduction to Gothic Script - Nomenclature, Textualis and Cursiva
5) Gothic Script I (France)
Week 2
6) Gothic Script II (England)
7) Gothic Script III (Germany)
8) Gothic Script IV (Italy)
9) Gothic Documentary Hands
10) Humanistic Script and Presentations of Group Work
After the first session, transcription exercises will be set, and weekly tests on abbreviations will also be conducted. Although it is intensive the summer school is immensley rewarding as well.
In addition to the classroom, visits will be organised to the University and Cathedral manuscript collections, and the Muniments and Archive collections (including early examples of Magna Carta copies and re-issues) in 5 The College.
