Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies

Provisional Programme

The conference will open with a key note lecture by one of our most esteemed early medieval archaeologists Dame Professor Rosemary Cramp, who has spent a lifetime investigating and providing new insights into the early Christian archaeology of the North East of Britain. Invited speakers, including a second keynote speaker Professor Martin Carver, will also discuss the archaeological legacies of the Picts and Scots and focus on evidence for interactions and contacts between Anglo-Saxons and peoples to their north and west. A field trip will take us to the remote holy island of Lindisfarne, to Bamburgh a Bernician seat of royal power and to Yeavering, the site of one of the largest hall complexes in North West Europe. A formal conference dinner at Durham Castle and opportunities to view Durham Cathedral, Durham special manuscript collections and the complete surviving eighth-century church at Escomb will provide an introduction to Durham and its region.
