The Institute for Local Governance

The Institute for Local Governance (ILG) is a pioneering research and knowledge exchange venture designed to maximise the benefits of collaboration between all five universities in North East England and the wider public realm. 

We are a unique research partnership between all the North East local authorities, universities, police forces, fire and rescue services and other public sector partners and we are hosted at Durham University.  We are also building our links with the private and civic sector.

This partnership shares the vision of supporting innovation, improvement, efficiency and quality in public services.  We are an ally through transformation and change, helping to save public sector organisations money, sourcing expertise locally and providing academic opportunities. We aspire to be an internationally recognised centre of excellence in the field of local governance.
