Biography
My background is a mixture of physical geography (at the University of Cambridge) and civil engineering (at the City University, London). This has allowed me to develop a strongly quantitative approach to the understanding of hydraulic and hydrological processes, but one that is grounded very strongly in a geographical approach. In particular, my work seeks to couple theoretical and conceptual analysis with numerical models, as developed and applied to particular field - and laboratory - measured processes. This recognises that the characteristics of a location can have a major modifying effect upon the processes that are observed, In turn, it is a major scientific challenge as generic rules may be obscured by the detail of particular places; and meaningful general models can only be developed when applied to particular places. Over the last five years the research has taken on an increasingly practical and applied emphasis, recognising that many of the tools that I have been developing are needed in order to assist with the management of environments subject to evermore stringent legislation. In summary, my research interests are concerned with the quantification of hydrological and hydraulic flows, and the associated impacts upon solute and sediment transfer, geomorphology and ecology, including:
(1) quantification of complex geomorphological surfaces, notably river systems, using remote sensing;
(2) application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to complex open channel flows where the shape of the boundary can have a significant effect upon flow processes and hence sediment dynamics and channel instability;
(3) the interface between flow hydraulics and aspects of in-stream ecology;
(4) the application of high resolution topographic data to landscape modelling, especially with reference to questions regarding land management and future climate change.
