Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience

Research

Nearly all of IHRR’s research is focused on building resilience by accounting for both physical and/or social vulnerability. This includes research in climate adaptation from the BIOPICCC project as well as developing ways to build resilience to natural hazards in developing countries, which includes the International Landslide Centre that researches human vulnerability to landslide impacts. Resilience is about coping with risk, which is the aim of the research programme Transcending Risk: Building Resilient Communities that looks at how researchers can facilitate the acquisition of knowledge to enable risk reduction strategies within communities prone to risks and/or hazards. Resilience is also a theme underlying the Tipping Points project in that it deals specifically with the possibility of living in a ‘tipping point world’ and what that means for building resilience to different kinds of hazards and risks in society, including financial risks.
