Major new donation from the Christopher Moyes Memorial Foundation

(2 October 2012)

In an important new development for Postgraduate support at Durham University, the Christopher Moyes Memorial Foundation Trust has generously elected to support two PhD studentships over the next three years.

The following studentships are supported by the Christopher Moyes Memorial Foundation that will be used to fund their research at IHRR beginning autumn 2012:

Mr Muhammad Jahedel Huq: “Negotiating spaces: NGOs, Climate Change Adaptation and Development”.

Mr Liaqat Hussain: “Pakistan Earthquake 2005: private housing reconstruction in Asad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan; a study of an owner driven approach”.

The Christopher Moyes Memorial Foundation was established in memory of Mr Christopher Moyes, OBE. At his untimely death in 2006, Chris was a leading figure in the British transport industry, Chief Executive of the transport company Go Ahead and Chairman of the Council of the University. The Foundation aims to support opportunities which Chris himself would have wished to support within Durham.

This gift will further promote the partnership between the Foundation and the University, (especially the Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR)). Through this partnership, the University works with the Foundation toward shared aims to develop international resilience to hazards and risks in our environment and to support promising early career researchers from countries where these issues are particularly challenging.

Mrs Janice Moyes, one of the Trustees, said:

‘The trustees of the Foundation wish to say how delighted they are to continue their association with Durham University and IHRR in particular. The students that have been sponsored by the Foundation are ones that we firmly believe can “make a difference” a philosophy that Chris himself always embodied. We wish Liaquat and Jahed all the best in their studies’.

Prof Sarah Curtis, Executive Director of IHRR said:

'We are most grateful for this very generous support from the Christopher Moyes Memorial Foundation. This will be a wonderful way to pursue the very worthy goals promoted by Christopher Moyes during his lifetime, and now by the Foundation Trustees. I'm delighted for the two students receiving these awards; they have great projects with enormous potential to make a positive impact in the world and their work will make an important contribution to research in the Institute of Hazard Risk and Resilience’.

Examples of Moyes-funded postgraduate research at the Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience:

  • 'Struggling to Survive: The Fishermen of the Boleshwar River' in IHRR's ezine
  • 'Children in self care at risk in Tanzania' on IHRR's blog
  • 'Surviving the Storm: Rebuilding after Cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh' in IHRR's magazine Hazard Risk Resilience
