Increasing Resilience to Natural Hazards Workshop

(1 March 2011)

IHRR welcomed colleagues from the National Society of Earthquake Technology (NSET-Nepal), the Nepal School of Social Work, and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC), Bangkok who participated in a workshop on 'Building Rural Resilience in Seismically Active Areas'.

The project, funded by the NERC and the ESRC under their Increasing Resilience to Natural Hazards Programme (IRNH) seeks to better understand community perceptions of earthquake-related hazards in rural areas of Nepal, and the factors increasing their vulnerability, with a view to identifying the current research needs across the physical and social sciences.  The Durham Team (comprising Alex Densmore (PI), Dave Petley, Nick Rosser, Lena Dominelli, Jonathan Rigg, Katie Oven and Samantha Jones (Northumbria)) were joined by the project's advisors: Dr Ben Wisner (Oberlin College, Ohio) and Professor Greg Bangkoff (University of Hull).
