Advanced Apprenticeship Programme

What is an Advanced Apprenticeship?

The Advanced Apprenticeship programme is a training scheme co-ordinated by the Human Resources Training Team.  The University offers Advanced Apprenticeships in Business and Administration.

Advanced Apprentices are appointed as employed permanent staff from day one.  The posts are full time and follow normal hours of work, terms and conditions.  The training period usually takes two years, with the expectation of promotion to the next grade on completion.

Apprentices learn on the job and by taking part in training away from the workplace, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money, all at the same time.

By agreeing to do an Apprenticeship, you're agreeing to work well and study hard.  The success of any Apprenticeship is dependent upon your hard work and dedication.  Apprenticeships are increasingly popular and are a fantastic way to further your career plans, but they're not for everyone.  As an Apprentice at Durham University, you'll be given the very best training for formal qualifications by both the Training Team and your department.  In return, you'll be expected to use your training and studies to do the best job possible.  If you're not keen on the idea of further study or not sure you could commit for up to two years, then an Apprenticeship may not be for you.

Terms and conditions of employment

The posts are full time and the normal hours of work are 37 hours per week, Monday - Friday.

There are 27 days paid holiday each year, 4 customary holidays (Christmas shut down period days) and 8 public holidays.  Holidays should be taken between 1st January and 31st December each year.

The starting salary is 80% of a Grade 1 salary or 80% of a Grade 2 dependent on the role and responsibilities.

Entry requirements

Applicants for Advanced Apprenticeships must have achieved at least 4 GCSEs at grade A-C including English Language, or an equivalent qualification in a relevant subject area.  To be eligible to apply for an Apprenticeship position applicants must not have obtained a higher education qualification at Level 4 or above as defined on the NQF or QCF, including being awarded a first degree by a recognised university or other recognised higher education (HE) institution, with the exception of anyone who has participated in New Deal.
