HR: Annual Staff Review

Section A - Self Review and Forward Planning

To get the most from the review meeting, the reviewee should do some personal preparation in advance.  The first part of the form (Section A) helps the reviewee to reflect on their role and guides them through the main areas that will be covered in the meeting.

Section A should be in the format of brief notes/bullet points and should be given to the reviewer at least five working days prior to the meeting.

Section A.1

The reviewee should provide a self-review of the previous year's activity.  This should include specific reflections on all aspects of the job taking into account work that went well and areas where improvements or changes might be made, providing examples in each case.

This section is also an opportunity for the reviewee to think about any outreach or engagement activities they may have been involved with during the last 12 months. This activity may have been on a local, regional or national basis involving educational, business or voluntary organisations.

Section A.2

Staff should ensure that they are aware of departmental objectives and priorities prior to undertaking the ASR process.

As part of the self-review process, the reviewee should complete this section based on an understanding of his/her own future priorities and work objectives within the department; this will form the basis for discussion and agreement with the reviewer.

As a guide, there should be up to six objectives to reflect the scope and level of role. The number of objectives discussed will depend on the nature of the member of staff's  role.

For each objective, there should be a clear and realistic timescale for achievement and clear outcomes in order to provide a sound basis for assessment and feedback at the next review.  Objectives should be both realistic and challenging.

The section is also an opportunity for reviewees to think about any outreach or engagement activities they would like to become involved with in the future.

Reviewees also have the opportunity to think about any training and development that they feel will help them to achieve their objectives.

Section A.3

The Reviewer should provide comments in response to the Reviewee and based upon the review discussion.
