College of St Hild and St Bede

Social spaces

The recently refurbished College Bar is a vibrant social space (rather than a 'pub') with sofa seating, a large-screen plasma TV, a pool table, games machines, music outlets and a variety of traditional board games, creating a relaxed and informal atmosphere.  A coffee machine and wireless networking are also soon to be installed. The large split-level main lounge hosts regular music nights, quizzes and comedy nights; while the adjoining James Lawrence Room ("back bar") hosts selected on-screen sporting events (including those broadcast at "unsocial hours" from around the world!). Our bar licence  also covers our outside patio area (the Adam Thurston Memorial Terrace), equipped with seating and patio heaters.

The professional steward, the student bar staff and the SRC Executive promote a responsible attitude towards drinking where free soft drinks are provided at major events, financed by the student body. A recent highlighted innovation has been the introduction of "on-tap" guest real ales!

The extensive Bede Lawns and the Adam Thurston Terrace, both of which are adjacent to the complex and have dramatic views of Durham, provide additional outdoor space for social events.

Other Common Rooms

In addition, to the Alan Pearson Common Room we have a number of other common rooms that you can enjoy.

The Junior Common Room:  Used as a dance studio and rehearsal space.

The Postgraduate Common Room: Used as a venue for specific events e.g. drama rehearsals, clubs and societies admin meetings.

A number of the individual blocks also have their own small common rooms.
