History

The bar is named after Dr Vernon Armitage, Principal of the college from 1975 to 1996, who was greatly loved and respected by the students. He still lectures in mathematics and is patron of Student Community Action as well as founder of Durham University Charities Kommittee (DUCK). “Gurkha’s Corner” is one of the most popular spots in the bar, named after Mike Metters, an extremely popular Hild Bede rugby player who tragically lost his battle against cancer on Christmas Eve 1997.
