Chemical Safety
The principal processes in place to deal with health and safety risks arising from the use of chemical substances are based on the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH). The University procedures are explained in Sections C2, C3, D2, D3, F4, H1, R4 and S1 of the Health and Safety Manual.
For a full list of H&S Manual Sections that relate to chemical safety, go to: Chemical Safety Manual Sections
Other aspects of Chemical Safety:
Chemical Weapons Act:
At the end of each calendar year, the University is required to declare the presence and use of a range of prescribed chemicals. See Section C2. The H&S Service collates the data from Departments in December/January.
NOTE: The use of any substances listed in Schedule 1 to the Act is prohibited unless a license has been obtained. For further advice please contact the H&S Service.
Drug Precursors:
Certain prescribed chemicals are legally controlled and the following 'Schedule 1' substances may not be obtained, kept or used on University premises without a licence:
Ephedrine
Ergometrine
Ergotamine
Lysergic acid
1-phenyl-2-propanone (BMK)
Psuedoephedrine
N-acetylanthranilic acid
3-2Methylenedioxy-phenylpropan-2-one(PMK)
Isosafrole Piperonal Safrole Norephedrine
Other substances require declaration if held beyond threshold quantities. Full details can be found in Section D3 of the Health and Safety Manual.
